    Everybody Hurts

Not long ago, I lost yet another friend. His name was Jacob, and he was a good friend. I have lost many good friends due to suicide in the past few years. Every time one of my fellow combat veterans chooses to end their lives; I begin to think about what I can do to help when I can't tell the signs? What if there are no signs because they wear an invisible mask that shows a happy-go-lucky individual that it's hurting inside? Don't want to talk about it with someone close to you? No problem! Don't let your mask define you! Please reach out to someone! Here are some numb

    Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial
  18. The history of the United States Coast Guard goes back to the United States Revenue Cutter Service, which was founded on 4 August 1790 as part of the Department of the Treasury. The Revenue Cutter Service and the United States Life-Saving Service were merged to become the Coast Guard per 14 U.S.C. § 1 which states: "The Coast Guard as established January 28, 1915, shall be a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times." In 1939, the United States Lighthouse Service was merged into the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard itself was moved to the Department of Tra
  19. The United States Marine Corps Birthday is celebrated every year on 10 November with a traditional ball and cake-cutting ceremony. On that day in 1775, the Continental Marines were established.

    U.S. Navy Birthday

In March 1794 Congress responded by calling for the construction of a half-dozen frigates. And, once again, the United States had a navy. Although the Continental navy was later dismantled, October 13, 1775 remains the U.S. Navy's official birthday.

    U.S. Army Birthday

The U.S. Army was founded on 14 June 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized enlistment of riflemen to serve the United Colonies for one year. The 14 June date is when Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in The Committee of the Whole.

    Armed Forces Day

Today is Armed Forces Day honoring all Service members serving in the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and U.S. Coast Guard. Thank you for your patriotic service in support of our country! On Aug. 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Happy Armed Forces Day, everyone!
